Burris Family Connection to Memorial Day

In honor of Memorial Day weekend, we wanted to share a quick story written by Allison Burris Castellanos, one of the 12 family members in the 5th generation of the Burris Family.

Allison writes,

“Charles Donnan Holzmueller, Jr. was born on December 21, 1920. He grew up in Milford, Delaware with Jack Burris. He served as a Seaman First Class with the U.S.S. Cythera, a submarine in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Donnan was killed when his submarine was sunk by a German Submarine on May 2, 1942 off the coast of North Carolina.

Howard Cornelius Wilkins was born on October 13, 1920. He grew up in Milford, Delaware with Jack Burris. He enlisted in the Army on January 15, 1943 and served as a 2nd Lieutenant and Co-Pilot of a B-24 Liberator Bomber with the U.S. Army Air Force based in Italy during World War II. He was a co-pilot when his plane was shot down on July 3, 1944 over Romania.

By the end of World War II, 2 of Jack’s best friends from his childhood in Milford had been killed in the war. Jack & Lillian Burris named their oldest son Robert Donnan Burris to memorialize the life of Jack’s childhood friend Charles Donnan Holzmueller, Jr. and they named their youngest son Howard Wilkins Burris to memorialize the life of Jack’s childhood friend Howard Cornelius Wilkins.

My grandparents are absolutely amazing. They named 2 of their children after Milford boys who were killed during the war. What an amazing and beautiful way to remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

Thought you would enjoy our family connection to Memorial Day!”

Let us all remember those who have given their lives for our freedom and honor them appropriately this weekend and always.
